Leura Public School officially opened on 6th March 1906, with an enrolment of 41 pupils, but by the end of April this number had risen to 84. The original school was timber building designed to accommodate 144 pupils. The first principal, or teacher–in-charge was Mr Gollan.
The school population grew so rapidly that the Department of Lands needed to release more land in 1912, 1956 and 1968.
Unfortunately, the original school buildings were destroyed on 2nd December 1957 by a bushfire that devastated the villages of Leura and Wentworth Falls. The steps of the original building can be found on the edge of the Thanksgiving Foundation garden.
