Starting Kindergarten in 2027
Starting primary school is a big step for children and families. Our school runs orientation and transition activities to help your child feel ready for Kindergarten and to support you as parents and carers.

Before your child starts Kindergarten
Enrolment policy
Leura Public School accepts all students from within its local catchment area. Consideration may be given to families outside this catchment area. Please contact the school for more information.
Kindergarten orientation and information sessions
Our orientation sessions help children:
- meet teachers and classmates
- explore classrooms and playgrounds
- practise simple routines
Parents and carers join information sessions to learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication. If you need an interpreter, let us know.
Transition to Kindergarten Program
Transition Fair
Wednesday 29th July 2026 9:30am – 11:30am
This is a wonderful opportunity for families to experience life at Leura Public School. Children will enjoy performances, explore classrooms and get a feel for what their school days will be like. Parents and carers can also learn more about the enrolment process and meet our friendly staff.
Book Character Parade
Tuesday 25th August 2026 10:00am – 12:00pm
Come dressed as your favourite book character and join us for a morning of fun, followed by a picnic on the hill. Costumes can be simple or creative – it’s all about celebrating the joy of reading!
Class Visit
Wednesday 2nd September 2026 9:30am – 10:30am
Children will have the chance to visit a classroom and meet their buddies, who will help guide and support them as they begin their journey in 2027. This is a lovely opportunity to build confidence, make connections, and start feeling part of the school community.
Athletics Carnival
Friday 18th September 2026 11:30am – 1:00pm
We’re excited to welcome our preschoolers to join in the fun at the K-2 Athletics Carnival! It’s a great chance to get moving, cheer on friends, and be part of the action. Please make sure your child wears their sports clothes, brings a hat, and a water bottle to stay cool and hydrated.
Class Visit
Wednesday 21st October 2026 9:30am – 10:30am
Children will enjoy another classroom visit, giving them more time to explore the learning environment and become familiar with school routines. This additional visit helps build confidence and excitement as they continue to settle into the idea of starting school.
School Assembly
Friday 30th October 2026 2:00pm - 3:00pm
We warmly invite you to join us for our K-6 Assembly! Come and celebrate our students’ achievements, enjoy class items, and share in the pride of our school community. We’d love to see you there.
Library and Music Lesson
Tuesday 3rd November 2026 9:30am - 11:15am
Children will have the opportunity to take part in a library and music lesson, giving them a taste of the rich learning experiences at school. They’ll enjoy exploring books, listening to stories, and engaging in fun, interactive music activities.
Christmas Sing-A-Long and Picnic
Friday 11th December 2026 10:30am - 11:15am
Our preschoolers are invited to a festive Christmas Sing-A-Long and Picnic! Bring a picnic rug, some lunch, and get ready to sing and celebrate with joyful songs and holiday fun. It’s a lovely way to finish the year together!
Getting ready at home
You can help your child get ready by encouraging independence and routines. Try:
- packing and unpacking their school bag
- dressing themselves and practising hygiene
- following simple routines at home.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
